The first film in The Mortal Instruments series, “City of Bones” is now in pre-production for an August, 2012 start date in New York and Toronto. The casting director has begun auditions for the film’s starring roles, and aside from the lead roles of Clary Fray and Jace Wayland, all major parts are up for grabs. Lily Collins has signed on to the starring role, and despite rumors – Jamie Campbell Bower will play the role of Jace. All major roles are being cast out of Los Angeles, New york, and Toronto – extras will be cast in New York and Toronto.

The extremely talented Scandinavian filmmaker Harald Zwart will direct “Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” from an adapted screenplay written by Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King. The film is based on the first of six young adult science fiction and fantasy novels written by multiple award-winning author Cassandra Clare. Screen Gems has hired the perfect director for “City of Bones”. Harald Zwart has been making movies since he was eight years of age. He has directed everything from fantastic music videos and commercials, to comedy hits such as the Norweigan film “Long Flat Balls” and the blockbuster movie “The Karate Kid” starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan – which has grossed over $340 million for Sony Pictures. With all of the diverse and beautifully imagined scenes to be shot, Zwart is likely to give movie-goers an experience of a lifetime.

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group subsidiary company Screen Gems is backing “City of Bones,” with Unique Features and Constantin Film Development as production companies. Martin Moszkowicz will executive produce, and Robert Kulzer will oversee daily production for Constantin. Michael Lynne and Robert Shaye will produce for Unique Features.

Fans of Cassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” novels will be familiar with the roles currently being cast by Stephanie Corsalini Ligorner. Among the roles being auditioned for are Alec Lightwood, 20-25 year old gay British male; Simon Lewis, a dark haired tall and skinny 18-20 year old male; Isabelle Lightwood, 18-20 year old sexy British female; and Magnus Bane, a 25-30 year old Asian bisexual male. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’s Jamie Campbell Bower has been cast in the role of Jace Wayland. There have been countless rumors that Bower is no longer attached with the film. However on Cassandra Clare’s official website, she posted on April 11, 2012 that Jamie Campbell Bower is “100% Jace” and the rumors are false.

Story:

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray (Lily Collins) heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing – not even a smear of blood – to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower), a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know.
