Netflix talent search for ‘Central Park Five’ lead roles

Academy Award nominated director Ava DuVernay has launched a national talent search seeking five lead roles for the Netflix project “Central Park Five.” The project is a five-episode limited series about a group of young men – four black and one Hispanic – who were wrongfully convicted of brutally raping a jogger in 1989. Their confessions were coerced, as was later confirmed, but they spent 6 to 13 years in prison.

Ava DuVernay, who describes the project as a five-hour film, will also write and executive produce. Also executive producing are two-time Academy Award nominee Oprah Winfrey, two-time Christopher Awards winner Jonathan King, along with Primetime Emmy Award nominees Jane Rosenthal, Jeff Skoll, and Berry Welsh. DuVernay is also reuniting with her “Selma” and “Middle of Nowhere” cinematographer Bradford Young.

DuVernay has stated that each hour of the series will focus on one of the five men convicted, “Each boy is the center for an hour, so they each get their own hour as the film is progressing. So the case is progressing but each hour another boy is more prominent until you get to the fifth boy at the end.”
