“Fifty Shades of Grey” centers on literature student Anastasia Steele and billionaire Christian Grey. When Anastasia goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms. Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family – Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.
Northern Irish actor, model and musician Jamie Dornan has been cast in the role of Christian Grey. Dornan, whose great aunt is Academy Award winning legendary actress Greer Garson, was a series regular on the ABC television show “Once Upon a Time,” and on the Netflix series “The Fall”. He recently completed filming the lead role in the indie feature film “Flying Home”. Also starring in “Fifty Shades of Grey” is Miss Golden Globe winner Dakota Johnson in the role of Anastasia Steele. Johnson was a series regular on the Fox Network television show “Ben and Kate”. She has starred in such films as “21 Jump Street” and “The Five-Year Engagement”. She recently completed shooting “Theo” starring opposite Mira Sorvino, and the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures feature film “Need for Speed” starring alongside Michael Keaton and Aaron Paul. BAFTA Film Award nominee Jennifer Ehle has joined the “Fifty Shades of Grey” cast playing the role of Carla. Ehle recently starred in the MGM reboot of “Robocop,” “A Little Chaos” starring opposite Kate Winslet, “Black and White” starring with Kevin Costner, and “The Forger” starring opposite John Travolta and Abigail Breslin. Luke Grimes has been cast as Elliot.
Three-time BAFTA Awards nominee Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct “Fifty Shades of Grey” from an adapted screenplay written by British scribe Kelly Marcel. Taylor-Johnson is one of a group of artists known as the Young British Artists (aka “Brit artists” or “Britart”), a loose group of visual artists who first began to exhibit together in London, in 1988. Aside from several short films, Taylor-Johnson’s sole feature film directorial credit is “Nowhere Boy” starring Aaron Johnson and Kristin Scott Thomas. She is also in talks to direct the Columbia Pictures feature film “The Reliable Wife”. Writer Kelly Marcel – who is also an actress – was executive producer of the Fox series “Terra Nova”. She also wrote the screenplay for the recently completed Disney feature film “Saving Mr. Banks”.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Michael De Luca will co-produce “Fifty Shades of Grey” under the banner of his company Michael De Luca Productions. De Luca has enjoyed a stellar producing career that spans over 25 years. His Oscar nods came from producing the Columbia Pictures feature films “Moneyball” starring Brad Pitt, and “The Social Network” starring Jesse Eisenberg. He is currently producing the Universal Pictures feature film “Dracula”, which is shooting in the United Kingdom. Also co-producing “Fifty Shades of Grey” is Academy Award nominee Dana Brunetti for Trigger Street Productions. Brunetti’s Oscar nomination also came from producing ” The Social Network”. In selling the film rights for “Fifty Shades of Grey” to Universal Pictures and Focus Features, E.L. James retained much creative control of the production and is also producing.
