Working Title Films and Universal Pictures are in pre-production on the British live-action musical film adaptation of "Les Miserables". The casting directors are auditioning actors for the lead and supporting roles, and smaller roles will be cast afterwards. The extras, stand-ins and photo doubles for the actors will be hired closer to the beginning of principal photography, which will commence in mid-March, 2012.
The lead actors cast in "Les Miserables" so far include Golden Globe Award nominated Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Academy Award winner Russell Crowe as Javert, Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush as Monsieur Thenardier, two-time Academy Award nominee Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier, Academy Award nominee Anne Hathaway as Fantine, and five-time Teen Choice Award winner Emma Watson as Cosette.
Academy Award winner Tom Hooper will direct "Les Miserables" from an adopted screenplay written by two-time Academy Award winning scribe William Nicholson. Hooper directed the 2010 film "The King's Speech" which won four Academy Awards and a Golden Globe, among countless other prestigious film awards. "Les Miserables" is adapted from the London musical and the 1862 French novel by author Victor Hugo, which is widely considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century.
Debra Hayward, Eric Fellner, and Tim Bevan of Working Title Films will produce along with British theatrical producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who was described as being "the most successful, influential and powerful theatrical producer in the world" by the New York Times. Liza Chasin will executive produce for Working Title. The music is by the French writing team of Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Alain Boublil.
The producers are strongly leaning toward releasing "Les Miserables" with native 3D (Native 3D is content acquired by recording two different views of the same image, one for the right eye, one for the left. Non-native 3D is taking an original single view of an image and simulating the two eye views of native 3D. In most all cases non-native 3D is not anywhere as good as native 3D. A number of problems can occur, including lack of apparent depth). The "Les Miserables" plot unfolds in 19th-century France during the revolution, which is sure to bring many vivid battle sequences and period scenes in an action-packed 3D film experience.
Universal has slotted "Les Miserables" for release on December 7, 2012, right in the center of Oscar season. This is a film that will hopefully give Universal a powerful horse in the 2013 Oscar race.
